Notes On Civilization Collapse Possibilities:

  • Climate cause: 9 of the 15 known global climate tipping points that regulate the state of the planet have been activated. A +4°C hotter world will support less than 1 billion people. {Resiliance}
  • Australian Policy Paper, May 2019: Climate change threatens extinction of human life. After nuclear war, human-induced global warming is the greatest threat to human life on the planet. {Wixstatic}
  • If fossil fuels, which supply human surplus energy, are a non-renewable resource, they will start to decline and an energy-starved, growth-less profit based production system will turn catabolic, cannibalizing the social assets it once created, profiting from scarcity, crisis, disaster, and conflict. … Warfare, resource hoarding, ecological disaster, and pandemic diseases will become the big profit makers. {CounterPunch}

Notes On Population and Earth Resources:

  • We are, as of June 2020, at or near 7.8 billion humans on the planet and even with the pandemic, at this time we are adding 40 million people to the Earth’s population per year. {Worldometers}
  • If all the world were to adopt American lifestyles, we would need at least four more planets to supply them (Graff, 2010) … It has been argued that preventing the collapse of human civilization requires ‘nothing less than a wholesale transformation of dominant consumer culture’ (Flavin, 2010). {SciDirect}
  • Most population experts believe the earth can sustain at most 10 to 11 billion people, expected by the year 2100. “If everyone agreed to become vegetarian, leaving little or nothing for livestock, the present 1.4 billion hectares of arable land (3.5 billion acres) would support about 10 billion people,” … 3.5 billion acres would produce approximately 2 billion tons of grains annually … enough to feed 10 billion vegetarians, but would only feed 2.5 billion U.S. omnivores, because so much vegetation is dedicated to livestock and poultry in the United States. {LiveSci}
  • If there is radical life extension technology where people are living to 150, this could mean a population of 18 billion by 2100. {NextBigFuture}
  • About two thirds of the predicted growth in population between 2020 and 2050 will take place in Africa. {UN}
